Through a joint effort between the Steering Committee and the Technical Oversight Committee we have crafted and aligned on a vision and mission statement for the Spinnaker project. Today we are excited to share these statements with the broader community.

Mission

Simplify delivery for enterprise scale

As organizations grow, so do their codebases, services, risks, languages, infrastructure, and, most notably, complexity. Increasing complexity is challenging even for the most advanced organizations. By productizing software delivery practices, opinions, and techniques based on broad industry standards, we can simplify that complexity. We envision a safe, secure, compliant workflow that encompasses the entire lifecycle of software delivery from development to production.

Vision

An easier life for developers, where delivery happens automatically in the background

We believe there is a world where developers should not stress about software delivery. Worries take energy and focus away from what they should be doing: creating business value. Developers should focus on writing code that adds value to their teams and broader organizations. They should not have to concern themselves with processes that can be automated, since the automation can preserve, or improve, the business value of delivering code to production. This will result in driving more enterprise value, and happier development teams delivering great ideas into the world.

What’s Next?

Our vision and mission are the foundations of the Spinnaker project. In the coming months, we will build on that foundation by announcing a set of strategic pillars that the Technical Oversight Committee & Steering Committee have aligned on. The pillars will identify areas of investment we think are critically important to the project, and will help guide the special interest groups (SIGs) and community to create a project roadmap for 2021 and beyond.
